Specifying sustainably

There’s a growing interest in environmentally friendly paints, but you don’t have to sacrifice quality or looks for environmental benefits.

Why use environmentally friendly paints?
Conventional, acrylic based paints contain two potentially harmful components: volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and acrylic softeners. These toxic ingredients contribute to greenhouse gases and groundwater pollution. For decorators and building occupants, they can cause chest complaints and aggravate allergies. It is now possible to find environmentally paints that perform as well as, if not better than, conventional paints.

What to look for
The easiest way to ensure you’re using environmentally sound paint is to check that it is EU Ecolabel approved. For interior paints, also seek SKA approval, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors’ confirmation that products used in office and retail fit-outs meet sustainability best practice.
